WellData: An Interreg Project Advancing Preventive Healthcare with Data

WellData, also known as Dataruimte voor Preventie, is an Interreg Flanders-Netherlands project supported by the European Union. The project explores how lifestyle and wellbeing data can be used more effectively and responsibly to strengthen preventive healthcare.

Healthcare systems in Flanders and the Netherlands are under increasing pressure due to ageing populations and the growing number of people living with chronic conditions. WellData responds to this challenge by investigating how citizens, healthcare organisations, researchers and policymakers can make better use of health-related data to support prevention, health promotion and more informed decision-making.

Over the past years, the project has examined several key conditions for the responsible use of lifestyle and wellbeing data. These include technical interoperability and secure data exchange, a standardised set of health indicators to measure health in a more uniform way, and an ethical, legal and social framework for the use of this data. Together, these insights form the basis for the further development of a personal health data space. The WellData platform acts as a proof-of-concept, showing how citizens could manage and share their health data in a controlled and meaningful way.

To better understand the technology and approach in practice, WellData is preparing pilot studies in different regions in Flanders and the Netherlands. In these fieldlabs, citizens, researchers and care organisations work together to explore the WellData platform and its possible applications.

These pilots examine how lifestyle and wellbeing data can be used in a useful, responsible and practical way to support preventive healthcare. They also help identify what is needed for citizens and professionals to trust, understand and apply data-driven prevention in real-life settings.

In addition, WellData continues to build a learning network in which organisations from healthcare, policy, research and industry share knowledge and experience around data-driven prevention and the future European Health Data Space.

NSX & Zipster’s Contribution to WellData

As a partner in WellData, NSX contributes its expertise in evolvable, interoperable and scalable healthcare data architectures. Our role focuses on supporting the technical foundations that allow data from different sources and organisations to be exchanged securely, consistently and sustainably.

NSX contributes to WellData through:

  • Interoperability & Secure Data Exchange
Supporting the connection of diverse health, lifestyle and wellbeing data sources through standardised and secure approaches, including the use of healthcare interoperability standards such as FHIR.
  • Evolvable Technical Architecture
Applying Normalized Systems principles to help design technical foundations that can adapt over time as standards, use cases, regulations and regional needs evolve.
  • Standardisation & Reuse
Contributing to a more structured approach to health data, enabling information to be interpreted, exchanged and reused across organisations and contexts in a responsible way.
  • Practical Exploration Through Zipster
Zipster, the digital referral platform developed by NSX, contributes to the preventive ambition of WellData by exploring how citizens and professionals can be guided towards relevant local health and social care services. This supports the broader project goal of connecting data-driven insights with accessible preventive support in people’s local context.

To better understand the technology and approach in practice, WellData prepares pilot studies in different regions in Flanders and the Netherlands. In these fieldlabs, citizens, researchers and care organisations work together to explore how lifestyle and wellbeing data can be used in a responsible and useful way for preventive healthcare.

Through WellData, NSX and Zipster contribute to a learning network of organisations from healthcare, policy, research and industry. Together, these partners are building knowledge and practical experience around data-driven prevention, personal health data spaces and the future European Health Data Space.
